“We start the construction of a very important road section – the Northern speed tangent of Sofia. The project has strategic importance for the capital, for the economic development of the city and its extension. The tangent will connect the northwestern and the southeastern districts of Sofia. On the other hand, the construction of those approximately 17 km will allow the removal of traffic, which is around the settlements, and will provide normal and safe movement.” With these words Minister of Regional Development and Public Works Lilyana Pavlova launched the long-awaited construction of the Northern speed tangent. She also handed the building permit to the Chairman of Road Infrastructure Agency (RIA) Eng. Lazar Lazarov. The symbolic first sod was attended by Mayor of Sofia Municipality Yordanka Fandakova, Deputy Minister of Regional Development Denitsa Nikolova and Chairman of the Board of the Bulgarian Construction Chamber (BCC) Eng. Svetoslav Glosov. Among the guests were also Deputy-Chairman Eng. Nikolay Stankov, Executive Director Eng. Ivan Boykov and members of the board of BCC.
The total cost of the project for the Northern Speed Tangent is BGN 234, 996, 783. It is implemented under the Operational Program “Regional Development” (OPRD) co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund and the state budget. The site is 16.54 km long. The beginning of the section is at km 0+000, which is located west of Sofia Ring Road (SRR), about 1.1 km after the fork for Mramor village, 2 km after that for “Lomsko shose” and 3.5 km before the junction of Novi Iskar to road II-16 Mezdra – Sofia.
“We start work in cold weather to catch up with the huge delay of a year and a half. The project has a long history. Years ago it was prepared for financing under the Operational Program “Transport”. Due to insufficient resources it was subsequently transferred to OPRD. The project received approval; a contractor was selected, but was eventually frozen. Activities begin and I hope by December the site to be completed so that we can absorb to the maximum the available resources,” said Pavlova.
The Northern Speed Tangent will be executed by a consortium HPVS-SST, which brings together Hydrostroy AD, Patni Stroezhi Veliko Tarnovo AD, Patinzheneringstroy AD, Patstroy Burgas Ltd and Vodstroy 98 AD. The value of the contract for engineering is BGN 180 million. Construction supervision will be done by association “SGS Tecnos – SGS Bulgaria, which brings together SGS Bulgaria Ltd, Sofia and SGS Tecnos S.A., Spain. Their contract is worth BGN 882,000.
