Perushtitsa: two epochs – one ideal – freedom
There is nothing more natural in April to visit the town of Perushtitsa, to talk to people, to make an interview with the mayor Radi Minchev. It seems here from every corner in your ears ring Vazov verses from “Epic of the Forgotten”. This is best felt up, near the monument where the town is clearly seen. History and descendants both hold in respect the April Uprising – the culmination of the national liberation struggles in Bulgaria. Everything in this Rhodope town is history! In 1869 Vasil Levski founded here one of the first secret revolutionary committees. On 23 April 1876 the church bells notified the announcement of the uprising and appealed to inhabitants of Perushtitsa on a struggle against the centuries old oppressor. The rebels led by teacher Petar Bonev carried out heroic battles against the numerous bashibazouk and retreated house after house. The last struggles after ten-day battles were held around the church “St. archangels Gavrail and Mihail” (built by Bratsigovo masters in 1847-1848), behind the strong walls of which were hidden women, children and old people. Despite the heroic defense, the bashibazouk hordes supported by regular troops rushed into the church and under their sharp yataghans fell dozens victims. The tragic events in 1876 mark a unique peak in the history of our country as few countries had.
