Rocks - star chance for Belogradchik
In 2010 and 2011 the rock phenomenon of Belogradchik rose in majesty and glory to the Arizona Grand Canyon, Himalayan Mount Everest and the Loch Ness Lake in Northern Scotland. This happened in a rating for the new Seven Wonders of the World, launched by a Swiss foundation. It could not become one of the wonders of the world but entered the reserve list of 21 sites, competing with 260 mountains, lakes and rivers. Fame, however, struck it prompting many Bulgarians and foreigners come to see the enchanting red rocks, sculptured by nature for 200 million years as images of people, animals, castles and battle scenes. In 2010 visitors reached 300,000. For the first time can be seen that the town is small for so many people. For the first time the municipality understands that this is the way to the development of the town, this is its future. And it starts with new plans, projects and realizations. But the main ones are ahead. Only after a year visitors to the historic fortress “Kale” near the town where the rocks are clearly visible will watch the attraction “Sound and light”. Its prototype is the performance ”Tsarevets” in Veliko Tarnovo. In Belogradchik it will tell the legends of the impressive figures of the rocks – Madonna, Schoolgirl, Adam and Eve, Haidut Velko… Tourists will be able to participate in scenes from the history of the town playing among the rocks. The attraction will be implemented under a project funded by Operational Program “Regional Development”. Before seeing it visitors need a parking for their vehicles, they need facilities where to eat and sleep if they decide to spend a night among the rocks. They also need a guide to lead them along the way to the wonderful shapes and tell them the legend of each one. The municipality takes care for all that. It realizes that making tourism a major livelihood of local people requires more ideas and concrete work from it. And support for everyone who decides to profit from the natural phenomenon and from the conditions for cave development, rural tourism, ecotourism, hunting and fishing because the region of Belogradchik is beneficial for that.
