“We expect the actual construction works on the third metro diameter to start in 2015 after completion of all necessary procedures,” said in an interview for “Stroitel” newspaper Prof. Dr. Eng. Stoyan Bratoev, Executive Director of “Metropoliten” JSC. “Because of the pending appeal we started the procedure for selection of contractor earlier since in such cases tenders for similar heavy and complex sites run from half a year to one year. Our aim is as during the previous programming period, after approving the Operational Program “Transport and transport infrastructure” to have ready for submission to the European Commission application form with analysis of benefits and costs to apply for funding of the track and get approval,” he explained.
“The law must be respected whether grounded or not those who appeal the procedure. We will consider whether to attack or not the decision of the Commission for Protection of Competition,” commented Prof. Bratoev the abrogation of the decision for initiation of procedure for procurement for design and construction of part of the third metro ray.
Along the new underground line in 2018 will take only 10 minutes from districts “Ovcha kupel”, “Hadzhi Dimitar” and “Levski” to downtown. The third line will connect “Botevgradsko shose” Boulevard with “Ovcha kupel” and Sofia ring-road. The data analyses show that over 170,000 Sofia citizens will travel along it daily. After full completion of the third metro ray a total 570,000 people will use the subway every day. In 2018 the subway will be 57 km long with 54 stations and will serve over 50% of the passengers in public transport in the capital. The metro will cover the main part of the territory of Sofia. It will report annually over 200 million trips. The car traffic will fall by 35% аnd cars will be by a quarter less.
Prof. Dr. Eng. Stoyan Bratoev, Executive Director of “Metropoliten” EAD: We will build the third metro diameter in 2015
How will the transport situation in Sofia improve after launching the third metro ray in 2018?
Sofia citizens will reach the downtown along it for just 10 minutes from the districts “Ovcha kupel”, “Hadzhi Dimitar” and “Levski”. The third line will connect “Botevgradsko shose” with “Ovcha kupel” and the ring-road. The analyses show that over 170,000 citizens of the capital will travel daily. So after its full completion nearly 570,000 people will use the subway every day. In 2018 the subway will be 57 km long with 54 stations and will serve over 50% of the passengers in public transport in the capital. It will cover the main part of the Sofia territory. It is expected after the launch of the third ray greenhouse gases significantly to reduce. Traffic on Sofia streets will fall by 35%, and cars will be by a quarter less. The subway will report annually over 200 million trips.
We must not forget that in addition to the construction of the subway we also renovate the related infrastructure. We will repair also the boulevards “Vladimir Vazov” and “Lincoln”, besides “Zhitnitsa” Street will go under “Tsar Boris III” Boulevard. On the first and last stop there will be above ground parking lots for 1,200 cars, buffer bus stations, etc.
What happens with the extension of the subway to “Slatina”?
The study of the track has passed at expert council. The fork of the third metro ray in the capital will pass through the “Slatina” district from “Shipka” Street under “Geo Milev” Street. From there it will reach “Festivalna” Hall and through “Slatina” district it will come out on “Asen Yordanov” Boulevard. The location of the remaining stations will be decided after further study. One of the options, over which experts work, is the track to continue along “Arena Armeec” Hall, to come out on “Tsarigradsko shose” Boulevard and to reach the Regional Hospital. In this case, the stops will be 6 and will be under the ground and the track will be totally 6 km long. It is necessary to predict the loading of the stretch with passengers and to make the appropriate transport, technological and economic argumentation. If these studies prove the need for this deviation, seeking funding will begin. Once the third metro ray is built, we will work for its further extensions which the capital needs, including the deviation to “Slatina”.
